PLAYER PROFILE GONZALO HIGUAÍN

Gonzalo Higuaín jumped onto the world football stage after being named Breakthrough Player on Argentina’s 2006 Torneo Apertura. “Pipita” is known for his speed in the last third of the pitch, his great striking ability, and his precisionpassing. Quick, elegant, and a knack for decision-making make Higuaín a fashionable forward in today’s world of football.

After several unsuccessful attempts, Higuaín scored his first goal as Madridista against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in 2006/07. His propensity for scoring in derbies dates back to his first Boca-River clash, when he led Los Millonarios to victory with a stunning brace. During his first year with Real Madrid he was criticised for rushing his shots on goal, but his few successful finishes were worth their weight in gold; Higuaín netted the game winner in the team’s amazing 4-3 comeback against Espanyol and lit a spark under his teammates in the season-closer against Mallorca.

“People criticise me for not scoring goals,” says the player now, “But every striker has his ups and downs. Scoring is something you also have to work hard on. I’m going to be more patient because last year I missed many chances by being rushing too much.” Whether he plays close to the six-yard box or along the right wing, Higuaín has what it takes to be a goal-scoring machine.

Gonzalo Higuaín was born on 10 December 1987 in Brest, France, where his father played after stints with Boca Juniors and River Plate in Argentina. Gonzalo is known as Pipita after his father, who was nicknamed Pipa. Higuaín does not occupy an extracommunitarian spot on the squad because he is a French national. He had little difficulty when it came time to choose whether to play for Argentina or France, however.

His brother Federico plays for River Plate, where they played together in Gonzalo’s debut on 30 May 2005 (Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata 2-1 River Plate).

Higuaín is very down to earth and he doesn’t follow fashion trends. He is simple and quiet-spoken, although seeing him joking around and having fun with the Brazilians on the squad is a common sight.

PLAYER PROFILE RUUD VAN NISTELROOY

Ruud Van Nistelrooy is one of the best centre forwards in Europe and already a Champions League veteran. He’s your prototypical striker who combines prowess and strength with outstanding technique. Van Nistelrooy has been instrumental to Real Madrid’s success since landing in Spain. His scoring stats are absolutely astonishing, and he’s already put on countless highlight reel performances such as the 3-3 draw in the Camp Nou and his four-goal night against Osasuna, both during the 2006/07 season. The Dutchman tied a record held by Olsen, Puskas, Olmedo, and Hugo Sánchez to become the fifth player to score in seven straight matches, all of which were crucial to the 2006/07 title run. He also became the third Madridista after Di Stéfano and Hugo Sánchez to win Pichichi honours in his first season with Real Madrid. French sports paper L’Équipe included Van Nistelrooy in its 2007 all-star starting eleven.

Van Nistelrooy’s rise to stardom began in 1993 with Dutch Second Division side FC Den Bosch, where he spent four years before being transferred to Heerenveen. He scored 13 goals in 31 matches in his first season in top flight football and was quickly signed by PSV Eindhoven. His first season with the Dutch giant couldn’t have gone any better, and he was named Dutch Player of 1998/99 after fnishing as the top scorer in the Eredivisie and the second highest scorer in Europe. He netted another 29 goals in his second year with the club before suffering what could have been a career-ending injury.

PSV and Manchester United had a deal in the works when Van Nistelrooy hurt his knee in a friendly against Silkeborg. While recovering from his injury the following month, he fell and tore his ACL. Despite the problems, the Dutchman again finished with the Eredivisie scoring title and Europe’s Silver Boot. Sidelined for nearly a year, many questioned Van Nistelrooy’s return, but he quickly cast away any long-term doubts after making the switch to Manchester United.

His brace against Fulham in his Premier League debut was just the beginning. Van Nistelrooy went on to score dozens of goals for Manchester in the Premiership and the Champions League, a competition which he’s led in scoring on two different occasions. His main accomplishment in England was winning the 2002/03 Premiership, and the following season he added European football’s most traditional title, the FA Cup to the list.

Van Nistelrooy was first selected to play for the Netherlands on 18 November 1998. He was only 22 when he scored his first goal for the Orange in a match against Morocco. He wasn’t able to participate in Euro 2000, and Netherlands didn’t qualify for the 2002 World Cup. He did, however, play in Euro 2004, but was dropped from the semifinal match against host Portugal, which Netherlands went on to lose. Portugal would again eliminate Van Nistelrooy and the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is obsessed with scoring and it’s on his mind 24/7. In fact, he is the only player to have led three different leagues in scoring.

Football is Van Nistelrooy’s blood, and his mom, who played as a midfielder, was “absolutely incredible. She was very, very good.” His father and grandfather also played football, and his brother continues to do so.

PLAYER PROFILE JAVIER PEDRO SAVIOLA

There’s something special about Javier Saviola. He landed at Real Madrid’s doorstep at the age of 26, which for many footballers is the peak of their careers, having already graced the dressing rooms of River Plate, Barcelona, Monaco, and Sevilla.

The striker has a killer goal-scoring instinct. Short-statured with an angelic face, Saviola is a devil when he gets hold of the ball in his opponent’s box. It’s at that moment that the ‘Rabbit’ turns into a true predator capable of destroying any defender with his speed and first stride, both of which have earned him comparisons to legendary Brazilian forward Romario.

Saviola always stood out as a member of River Plate’s youth system, the same team he debuted with in Argentina’s Primera Division at the age of 16. He scored his first goal in his first match in top flight football and is the youngest player to accomplish such a feat. He would go on to win the 1999 Torneo Apertura as the top scorer of the competition. Only 18-years and one day old, he was the second youngest player to pick up the honor, coming within eight days of Maradona’s record. Saviola also won the following year’s Torneo Clausura. He scored 45 goals in 85 matches with River Plate, plus another ten when including Copa Libertadores action.

Following his first World Cup appearance, and still only 19-years old, Saviola was signed by none other than FC Barcelona. After becoming a naturalized Spanish citizen in 2004, he was sent on loan to AS Monaco, where he played the entire 2004/05 season in the Ligue 1 and the Champions League. Upon returning to Catalonia he was again sent on loan to Sevilla, who went on to win the 2006 UEFA Cup. He returned to Barcelona at season’s end and in 2007 joined Real Madrid in the Spanish capital.

In 2001 Saviola was named MVP of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup after leading Argentina to the title as the competitions top scorer. He debuted with the Argentine national team on 16 August 2000, a match that ended in a 1-1 draw against Paraguay. He also played in the 2006 World Cup and scored one goal.

More than 3,000 people attended Saviola’s official presentation at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

PLAYER PROFILE RAÚL GONZÁLEZ BLANCO

The name Raúl has become synonymous with records in the world of football. Hundreds of matches, hundreds of goals, an enviable track record, and a Gold Medal for Sports Merit are just a few of the countless accomplishments of one of the best Spanish football players of the last 50 years.

Raúl is a product of Atletico Madrid’s youth system but was picked up by Real Madrid in 1992/93. His ascent through the Madridista factory can only be described as meteoric. Jorge Valdano tabbed Raúl for first team duty when he was only 17, thus becoming the youngest player ever to wear a Real Madrid shirt. A legend was born.

The Real Madrid captain has scored over 190 goals in close to 500 games in 14 seasons in La Liga, numbers that don’t just highlight his tremendous talent, but also establish him as one of the best Spanish players ever to play the game. His acute goal-scoring instinct has earned him the Pichichi Trophy in 1999 (25 goals in 37 games) and 2001 (24 goals in 36 games).

Raúl embodies Real Madrid’s core values of commitment, hard work, and composure every time he dons the team shirt, the only one he’ll ever wear in Spain according to him. One of his greatest accomplishments is that of all-time top scorer of the Champions League. He’s also a three-time UEFA Club Football Best Forward Award winner and a two-time Champions League Golden Boot winner.

Since making his international debut in 1996 against the Czech Republic, Raúl has won 65 matches, drawn 23, and lost just 14 with the Spanish national side. He is the only active footballer to have played more than 100 games for his country (102) and he is the second-most capped player of all time after Andoni Zubizarreta. He is also the only active player in the world to have played in 11 World Cup matches. Raúl has scored 44 goals for Spain, surpassing the likes of Hierro, Butragueño, Di Stéfano and Santillana.

In 2006 the Real Madrid captain was awarded the Royal Order’s Gold Medal for Sports Merit.

A quick glance at Raúl’s track record hints at his greatness. He has won 14 important titles which alone are enough to crown him as one of the greatest men in the history of Real Madrid. He made his First Division debut when he was only 17 years old and his career has rarely experienced a downturn since.

Raúl loves spending time with his family whenever he can. The eldest of his four children is named Jorge, after coach Jorge Valdano, and his second-born is Hugo, named after childhood hero Hugo Sánchez.

Raúl grew up in the Marconi colony of San Cristóbal de los Ángeles, a modest district of Madrid. His father Pedro was a staunch supporter of Atletico Madrid, where Raúl played as a young boy after a brief spell at San Cristóbal. Raúl’s greatest passion is football, but he also likes hunting, which he isn’t able to do as often as he would like. An avid reader, he is a great fan of author Arturo Pérez Reverte. He loves all sorts of Spanish music and is passionate about bullfighting.

PLAYER PROFILE RAFAEL VAN DER VAART

Rafael Ferdinand van der Vaart was born 11 February 1983 in Heemskerk. He started playing for De Kennemers, a small club in the town of Beverwijk, before moving to the Ajax youth academy. After racing through the ranks, he played his first game for the senior team on 19 April 2000, away at FC Den Bosch, but it was only the following season that he established himself as a regular starter, playing 27 league games and scoring seven times.

Still just 18, on 6 October 2001 he made his national team debut, as a second-half substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Andorra. As Holland had already failed to reach the World Cup, Rafael had to wait two years to play an official tournament for his country.

Injury forced him to miss the run-in to Ajax’s successful Eredivisie campaign and their Dutch Cup triumph against FC Utrecht in the 2001/02 season, but it did not stop him being named Holland’s Talent of the Year. And the following season, after his return to fitness, he scored a vital goal in the Champions League away to Lyon, which propelled Ajax into the knockout stages. Back on the domestic front, meanwhile, Rafael scored an impressive 18 goals in 21 league games in the Eredivisie. In 2003/04, he was once again an influential figure, as Ajax claimed another league title.

By that stage Rafael had firmly established himself as one of the stars of the Ajax team, not to mention one of the most popular players in Holland. His media profile was further increased by his relationship with popular Dutch actress Sylvie Meis. While Rafael was crowned as 2003 European Talent of the Year, Sylvie was voted as Holland’s Most Attractive Woman. In 2005, the couple married and the following year had their first child, a son who they named Damián.

By now his performances were attracting interest from some of Europe’s top clubs. He had previously been strongly linked to AC Milan, but in the summer of 2005 he signed for Bundesliga outfit SV Hamburg. In his first season he was one of the main driving forces behind the team’s qualification for the Champions League, scoring nine goals along the way, despite missing part of the season through injury. He also played a massive part in Hamburg’s impressive away form that season, scoring in each of their first four games on the road; in fact, in the course of his first one and a half seasons with the German club, they did not lose a single match away from home while he was on the pitch.

Rafael was expected to play an important part in Marco van Basten’s team for the 2006 World Cup, but was unlucky enough to suffer another injury during the run-up to the tournament, which restricted his role in Germany.

The 2006/07 season proved to be a difficult one for his club, and despite Rafael’s three goals in the Champions League group stages, they made an early exit from the competition, while languishing for several months in the bottom half of the Bundesliga table. However, the arrival of Rafael’s countryman Huub Stevens as head coach saw Hamburg march up the standings and they finished the season in a respectable 7th place, qualifying for, and indeed winning, the Intertoto Cup.

He responded in the first game of the 2007/08 season by putting in a big performance against Bayer Leverkusen; when his team was awarded a penalty, he stepped up to the plate and coolly slotted home the winner. Rafael has since played a key part in driving a galvanized Hamburg side that has been mounting a strong challenge for Bundesliga title.

Rafael van der Vaart’s mother was born in Chiclana de la Frontera, a region of Andalusia in southern Spain.

PLAYER PROFILE WESLEY SNEIJDER

Very few players in Europe are as versatile as Wesley Sneijder. He is an attacking midfielder who knows how to move with exquisite technique. He is also fast, possesses an excellent shot, and is deadly with either of his legs. Sneijder may be young, but he’s mature enough to be the driving force behind a team in a sticky situation and a leader in midfield. He can play as a defensive or attacking midfielder and as a right forward, where he combines perfectly when paired with a defensive-oriented teammate. Wesley is considered one of the best Dutch players to emerge from the Netherlands in the last few years.

Utrecht is more to Holland than just one of its principal financial and political centres. Players of the likes of Marco van Basten and Jan Wouters emerged from its football grounds, where Ajax scouts are always on hand in search of fresh talent, and where Wesley was discovered while playing for a local side.

Nurtured in the Ajax youth system, Sneijder quickly worked his way up until arriving at Danny Blind’s Ajax B squad. Blind was responsible for advised Ronald Koeman to promote Wesley to the first team, with whom he debuted in a 6-0 home throttling of Willem II in 2003. The midfielder was just 18 at the time, but he didn’t feel the heat of playing for a side of such historical importance and soon became the team’s stirring wheel. His opening season in the First Division couldn’t have been any better: 20 games played, four goals scored, and the Dutch league title to show for. His stats kept improving until he boomed in the 2006/07 campaign, during which he played 43 games and netted 20 strikes.

His five-year contract for Real Madrid was announced in August 2007 soon after inking an extension with Ajax. Sneijder is currently considered one of the best right-footed players at set-pieces.
Wesley debuted with the Netherlands Under-21 side against Czech Republic on 28 March 2003. His first game with the Dutch national team was against Portugal on 30 April that same year, when he became the eighth youngest man to play for Holland in the team’s history.

Sneijder reached the Euro 2004 semifinals with the Netherlands. He began the competition warming the bench, but he soon found a spot in the starting eleven and scored two goals. He was a also a starter in the four matches the Orange played in the Germany 2006 World Cup before they were eliminated by Portugal.

Football was practically a religion in his family, his father and both of his brothers sharing his passion for the sport. The Sneijder family rejoiced when they heard Wesley had been admitted into the youth system of one of the best football academies in the world.

PLAYER PROFILE RUBÉN DE LA RED GUTIÉRREZ

Rubén de la Red is the perfect example of the brilliance of Real Madrid’s youth system. Comparisons can easily be made with other great players on the squad that have excelled thanks to their elegant touch on ball, vision, and outstanding technique. At 23 years old, De la Red is a product of the Club’s academy. Since he joined the Under-17’s, the player stood out among his teammates and caught the attention of the Under-20’s coach, Quique Sánchez Flores. From then on, he evolved remarkably.

De la Red was one of the key players in Castilla’s return to the Second Division. His dominance in the midfield and swift touch on ball convinced Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who called upon the player to join the first team for its 2005 preseason tour. His debut with Real Madrid’s first team was on the 21st of September of that same year against Athletic Bilbao when he replaced captain Raúl González. He made his debut in the Champions League two months later against Rosenborg.

Misfortune struck Castilla and the team was relegated to the Third Division at the end of the 2006/07 season. De la Red joined Getafe for the 2007/08 campaign and had a brilliant year. Bernd Schuster and the Sports Directorship then decided it was time for Rubén to return to Real Madrid.

The youth system player was summoned to join his national team to play in Euro 2008. He was a starter against Greece, scored a sensational goal and eventually won the competition with Spain.

PLAYER PROFILE JOSÉ MARÍA GUTIÉRREZ HERNÁNDEZ

‘Madridista’ is the perfect word to describe Guti. The player has spent most of his life with Real Madrid and is a great example of the kind of talent that emerges from the youth system. Guti has played for almost every youth team since his arrival at the age of nine and has been considered as a special player by every one of his coaches. His rise to stardom kicked into high gear when he averaged 30 goals per season with the Under-20 team, and he wasn’t even played as a striker!

He joined Real Madrid B (now Castilla) for the 1995/96 campaign, during which his one-of-a-kind passing and class A attitude caught the attention of Jorge Valdano, who gave him the chance of making his First Team debut on 2 December 1995 against Sevilla; a match the Whites won 4-1.

Guti got his first real break in top flight football from Vicente del Bosque, who stepped in for John Benjamin Toshack and managed to lead the club to its eighth European Cup in 1999/00. Hours on end in the gymnasium and drastic improvements to his physiognomy earned Guti, until then a tactical, but frail magician, consistent playing time as well as his first call-up from the Spanish national team.

The Madridista finally established himself as a member of the First Team one year later. After replacing injured Fernando Morientes, he paired up with Raúl and scored 14 goals, which played a decisive role in the team’s 28th League title.

Coaches have always taken special interest in Guti because he can adjust to any position on the pitch. He natural position is that of attacking midfielder, but he has also been lined up as a second striker, a left winger, and a defensive midfielder.

In November 2006 Guti signed a contract extension with Real Madrid through 30 June 2010.

Guti also enjoys playing tennis, padel tennis, and basketball, but he’ll read any sport. There’s nothing more gratifying for Guti than spending time with his wife and two children. He adores his sister Teresa and his parents go to every home match to watch him play. His mother Carmen is his best friend and confidante.

PLAYER PROFILE ARJEN ROBBEN

Arjen Robben is a rare breed in modern day football. There may be many fast attacking midfielders nowadays, but very few are as capable as Robben is of dribbling the ball with such class inside the box and changing the pace of the game in such a way that thwarts any defenders attempts to steal the ball. He has a phenomenal knack for scoring and is an excellent shot, which also make deadly from outside the box.

Born in Bedum on 23 January 1984, Robben began playing football at V.V. Bedum before joining Groningen in 2000. His spectacular performances made him one of the stars of the always-mesmerising Dutch League, and soon the greatest teams in the competition came calling; PSV Eindhoven acquiring his services in 2002. Philips Stadion Robben brought out the best in Robben and he quickly established himself as one of Dutch football’s brightest prospects. Under the tutelage of Guus Hiddink, Robben made outstanding progress and helped lead PSV to the Eredivisie and Dutch Super Cup. He signed for Chelsea in 2004 after winning the Bravo Trophy, awarded to the Under-21 European Footballer of the Year.

The vertical nature of English football combined with Robben’s fancy footwork, long runs down the flanks, and masterful shots, soon made him a fan favourite among Blues supporters. He won every English title in play during his stint with Chelsea.

Robben has 27 caps with the Netherlands and has scored eight goals for the Orange. He was named Man of the Match two times during the 2006 World Cup; one of eight players in the tournament to pick up such a distinction.

In 2004 Robben found a lump on his left testicle, but after undergoing surgery the tumor was found to be benign. “It was a difficult time when football was no longer important,” said the player after being given the all-clear.

PLAYER PROFILE FERNANDO RUBÉN GAGO

Rubén Gago was born on 14 April 1986 in Ciudadela, Buenos Aires. He began his career at Parque, a modest Club where former Madridistas Fernando Redondo and Esteban Cambiasso, whose styles resembles that of Gago, also got their start. His next stop was the Boca Juniors youth system, where his entire professional career was developed. He made his First Division debut with Boca on 5 December 2004 in a 1-0 win over Quilmas, but it was during the 2005 season that his career took off and made him the star he is today. In 2005/06 Gago was one of the centrepieces of a team that won five titles in as many competitions.

Gago is a very dynamic footballer who predicates his game on ball movement. He a knack for distributing the football as his mental prowess tends to surpass his strength. Gago became a Boca mainstay shortly after he debuted and all offensive series had to develop at his feet. He is also capable of reaching the opponent’s box, perhaps even more so than Redondo, who he reminds us of in terms of vision for the game, his way of covering ground, and his ball protection. Gago also knows how to take advantage of his elbows and is never scared to get a little rough.

Maradona has described Gago as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and said that “he should never be left off an Argentina squad list.” Fernando Redondo, who so many compare him to, assured that Gago is the type of player that he always wanted on his team. “He’s got everything that I like in a midfielder. He’s always rises to the occasion, he keeps his head held high, and he’s got what it takes to read the game,” said the former Madridista. According to Jorge Valdano, Fernando Gago “is a footballer who thinks well and thinks fast, and who helps facilitate the distribution of the ball from in the midfield.

Fernando Gago won the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup 2005 with fellow teammates Oscar Ustari, Lionel Messí, and Sergio Agüero before making his Argentine national team debut in February 2007.

As is the case with many Argentine players, Gago has a nickname. He’s been called “El Pintita” ever since Ramón Maddoni scolded him for playing with his hair during a training session.

Fernando Gago is also a literature and art enthusiast. The first thing he did after landing in Spain was visit the Prado Museum.
